Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but I (and many other teachers) used to write an introduction letter to students at the beginning of a new cycle, eg, Cambridge class, IELTS class and then they wrote us back. I included personal details about about the course and some questions. Students seemed pretty motivated by it and the responses were really interesting and quite diagnostic,
